Supreme Court declines to intervene in a fight over the control of a historic Rhode Island synagogue and its religious bells worth millions.

FILE - In this July 30, 2009 file photo, visitors stand outside the Touro Synagogue, in Newport, R.I., the oldest existing Jewish house of worship in the United States. The U.S. Supreme Court decided Monday, March 18, 2019, not to take up the case over control of the synagogue, which means a lower court ruling that a New York synagogue has ownership, stays in place. twitterThe U.S.

Manhattan's Congregation Shearith Israel, the nation's oldest Jewish congregation, became trustee of Touro after Jews left Newport in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. It fought the plan to sell the bells. Lou Solomon, a lawyer for Congregation Shearith Israel, struck a conciliatory tone, saying he looked forward to "a return of harmonious relations" between them and Touro's congregation. But he added a caveat.

A trial judge awarded control of the property and the bells to the Newport group, but the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals went the other way, giving them to the group from Manhattan.

Supreme Court agrees to hear deadly DC sniper shootings caseThe Supreme Court agreed to consider Virginia’s plea to reinstate the life-without-parole sentence of a man who as a teenager participated in sniper shootings that terrorized the Washington, D.C., region in 2002 While this crime was particularly egregious, as a 'child' who was highly influenced by an adult and not fully formed, how responsible is he for his actions? The science is not clear on such cases. He did not participate. He murdered people. Glossing over this is an embarrassment. He was young. He was manipulated by the older man. The state is treating him unfairly.
