Bill C-33, introduced last fall, makes changes to several foundational pieces of legislation that govern the transportation sector, touching on everything from railway infrastructure and moving hazardous goods to port management and technological advancements.

NDP MP Taylor Bachrach speaks about changing the voting age to 16 during a news conference on Parliament Hill on Sept. 28, 2022, in Ottawa.

The NDP is giving a failing grade to the Liberal government’s bid to overhaul the laws governing Canada’s ports and railways. NDP transport critic Taylor Bachrach says the bill, which would update the mandate and powers of port authorities, create penalties for damaging railway property and give new powers to the transport minister to respond to safety and security concerns, doesn’t address pressing issues impacting Canada’s supply chains.

He’s also warning that it remains to be seen if amendments made at committee can salvage the “lacklustre” legislation, pointing to the lack of action to curtail the impact of industrial port traffic on local communities and wildlife as one of the biggest missed opportunities.
