Venezuela's supreme court suspends the results of the political opposition's primaries after María Corina Machado was elected to take on President Nicolás Maduro in a future presidential contest. The court also ratifies bans on running for office for Machado and two others.

“We urge Nicolas Maduro and his representatives to uphold the commitments they made at the signing of the political roadmap agreement,” a state department spokesperson said. “The US government will take action if Maduro and his representatives do not meet their commitments.”that the primaries, which were held independently without the involvement of the government, were under investigation for financial crimes and conspiracy.

The supreme court ruling could further divide the opposition between those who want to participate in 2024’s electoral contest and those who want to boycott it, Gunson said.
