"Two pieces of good fortune" stopped a terrorist attack that could have left people dead or with serious injuries, a court has heard.
As prosecutor Jonathan Sandiford KC opened the case on Monday, he told how Farooq had "prepared" to carry out the attack at the hospital, and had also researched RAF Menwith Hill and visited twice with an improvised explosive device. It was said the woman saw the message from Farooq an hour after he sent it. Mr Sandiford said: "Throughout that period of time, the improvised explosive device and weapons sat outside the hospital waiting for the evacuation he expected, but what never happened."
Mr Sandiford said the defendant told Mr Newby about his plan to take the bomb into the hospital and “kill as many nurses as possible”.“Mr Newby also persuaded the defendant to move away from the main entrance to a seating area so that the IED was as far away from the building as it was possible to go.”
The court heard when Farooq was encountered by the witness, "He told the man he was waiting for the shift change where there would be more people." Mr Sandiford said he showed him the imitation firearm, and told him his plan. Mr Sandiford said: "He admitted visiting Menwith Hill, but he maintained he had no terrorist intention and was not intending to attack Menwith Hill." He said he had no intention to set off the device at the hospital - only to "scare people."
