Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday nominated Alberta judge Mary T. Moreau as the next justice for the Supreme Court, ensuring that women will make up a majority on the country’s highest court for the first time in its history. Moreau, the chief justice of Alberta’s Court of King’s Bench, that province’s superior court, hails from Edmonton and prior to becoming a judge, practised criminal and constitutional law, and civil litigation. As with previous nominees under the Trudeau government, she was chosen through an appointment process run by a judicial advisory board, now headed by former P.E.I. Liberal premier Wade MacLauchlan.
“I am pleased to announce the nomination of the Honourable Mary T. Moreau to the Supreme Court of Canada, following an open and non-partisan selection process,” Trudeau said in a statement.
