A former UVF commander has told a court in Belfast that a man on trial for the murders of two Catholics carried out the attack weeks after police had been told where he was hiding while"on the run" because he was wanted for questioning for a previous murder and attempted murder.

He said the police had wanted to locate Mr Smyth because he was suspected of involvement in a murder and attempted murder. Defence lawyer Michael Borrelli KC put it to him that he had identified Mr Smyth as the gunman who killed Eamon Fox and Gary Convie because he knew he was someone of interest to Special Branch.

There has been a heavy police presence outside and inside Laganside courts while Haggarty has been giving evidence.
