A New York judge on Friday fined Donald Trump $US5,000 for violating a gag order barring the former US president from disparaging court staff during his civil fraud trial, warning that any future transgressions would bring “far more severe” sanctions including imprisonment.
Engoron imposed a limited gag order on October 3 after Trump in a social media post shared a photo of the judge’s top clerk posing with US Senate Majority leader Chuck Schumer, a critic of the former president, and called her the senator’s “girlfriend.” Justice Arthur Engoron speaks on day 2 of the civil trial of former US president Donald Trump at a Manhattan courthouse.Trump, who has sought to portray the case as intended to hurt him politically, has denied wrongdoing and defended his asset valuations. He has said banks conducted their own due diligence and profited on the loans.
