The Dutch national has admitted killing the 18-year-old in Aruba in 2005, but might never face trial, a lawyer tells Newsweek.

Joran van der Sloot will likely avoid prison time for killing Natalee Holloway, legal experts believe.The Caribbean island of Aruba, where the crime place in 2005, has a 12-year statute of limitations on murder and six years for involuntary homicide.Van der Sloot, 36, admitted in a federal court on Wednesday that he had beat the 18-year-old to death, but criminal attorney Paul DerOhannesian told Newsweek the Dutchman was unlikely to serve any time for the killing.

DerOhannesian, who has more than 30 years of criminal law experience, said that even without the statute of limitations issue, the authorities in Aruba 'may feel he already has so much time he has to serve on the Peruvian and U.S. charges that it may not accomplish much.'The attorney added that the decision to have the sentences run concurrently, or side by side, may have been part of the reason van der Sloot finally confessed.A U.S.
