The US Treasury Department is preparing to announce new sanctions against leaders of Palestinian Islamist group Hamas this week after their attack on Israel earlier this month, Axios is reporting, citing US officials. The report says the sanctions will increase pressure on countries that host Hamas leaders’ assets and will be part of several rounds of sanctions to come.
It follows Brian Nelson, Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, explaining to a Deloitte anti-money laundering conference in New York on Tuesday that “Treasury will bring our tools to bear against Hamas financing and the overall funding of terrorism”.
