For months, the message has been that full enforcement of short-term rentals will require changes to provincial law, specifically the Planning Act.
Last week, city staff told councillors the final piece of STR enforcement is having the province amend the Planning Act to give local bylaws more teeth. Staff also contacted the province to let them know of the request.
Council voted to approve the short-term rental licensing bylaw — which regulates STR operation and safety — at its Oct. 12 regular meeting. “They will start, as soon as they’re trained, enforcing any infractions of any bylaws of the planning and heritage department,” Jankov said.
