Justice Minister McEntee confirms that citizenship applications take a median turnaround time of 19 months.

There are 31,000 citizenship applications currently outstanding, Justice Minister Helen McEntee has confirmed.

However, she said that some changes are already taking place and the length of time it takes for files to be acknowledged has fallen from seven months to “a matter of weeks”.“4,210 of these are at the final stage of the application process,” Minister McEntee said. Up until the end of September, 10,882 people had been granted citizenship, while 111 applications had been refused.This is down from a high of 1,250 refusals in 2018. The number of refusals fell to 50 and eight in 2019 and 2020 respectively, before jumping back up to 696 in 2021.Just 3,041 applications have been refused.
