Sen. Cory Booker writes for The Post: 'You can tell a lot about a country by who it incarcerates. Some countries imprison journalists. Others imprison political opponents. We imprison the poor, the addicted, the mentally ill.'

Barbed wire at Maryland Correctional Training Center in Hagerstown, Md. By Cory Booker March 10 at 8:00 AM Cory Booker, a Democrat, represents New Jersey in the U.S. Senate.

Almost 90 percent of the people sentenced under this unfair disparity, such as Douglas, were black. None were given the leniency available to many wealthy, white people who break the law — for example, former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who was sentenced Thursday to four years in prison for his eight white-collar criminal convictions.

Douglas’s story is a testament to both the deep unfairness that exists within our broken criminal justice system and the transformative impact legislation can have on people’s lives. Earlier this year, Douglas was my guest at the State of the Union address, and I had the honor of hearing him tell his story in person. While his recounting of the moment he learned about his freedom was incredibly moving, what he told me next was the true revelation.

And neither will I. There are still far too many Americans unjustly stuck behind bars, languishing in warehouses of human potential that are tearing families apart, destroying communities, wasting taxpayer dollars and violating our ideals as a nation.

I endorse this agenda. The income disparity in access to legal services is also a major issue. However, the disparities mentioned are multi factor problems frequently attributed through vague logic to the rules and processes of law, when it makes no sense to do so.

DEMOCRATS Booker: poor, addicted, mentally ill, death row criminals Pelosi: illegal aliens make America America Harris: legalized drugs/sex, black women, browns Newson: homeless, taxes Schumer: depends on day/meds Sanders: 243yrs greatness enough Omar/Tlaib: death to all Israel

Q: What do you call a lawyer with an IQ of 100? A: Mr. President. Q: What do you call a lawyer with an IQ of 50 A: Senator.

I find that the Democrats are the ones breaking the laws and not being punished for their crimes. That is not justice, that is evil.

We also imprison whistle blowers which to me is as bad as imprisoning journalists. But yes, we imprison some of the most vulnerable in our society and it's sickening. This is your strongest front, Booker.

USA citizens believe their country is the best, yet so many will step on anyone just to achieve the “American Dream”. For the marginalized, that Dream is a nightmare and those with the most influence or power are doing nothing to stop the daily atrocities. USA is now the worst.

Love this quote,...where is the rehabilitation? Why do they hv to live like animals? Why z it so expensive to help them gt an education? Why r letters to my son returned? Shut 'em down and Re-do!

That’s do to President Clinton’s 1994 Crime Bill! President Trump Submitted a bill to Congress to have it repealed! Don’t blame President Trump for Clinton’s Crap!

Cory Booker & Dems late on criminal justice reform! Dems trying to make it their issue now when Pres Trump has address it.

What an asinine and moronic statement.... we imprison criminals! They go to court, are given due process. We imprison drunk drivers, thieves, murderers, drug dealers, rapists.... they break the law, they go to prison.

The poor, the addicted & mentally ill who commit crime & violent crime in some cases.

TabithaLipkin

What an exaggeration! How about those who break the law. They’re arrested. Brought to trial. Found guilty. Sentenced to prison. Are they all poor, mentally ill and addicted?

We imprison BLACKS

I have seen some so-called journalists who need to be locked up! ( cnn crew)

Actually, CoryBooker, we tend to incarcerate criminals...

Preferable to having junkies and the mentally ill running amok!

Don’t we imprison people who are convicted of breaking the law? SenatorBooker in your world does everyone get a pass, regardless of breaking the law. Termlimits TermLimitsNow

Ever think our poor and mentally I'll commit crimes at a higher rate? They are lying all over the streets of New York. What a lovely scene.

PREACH!!!

... while private gop prisonmasters remain incredibly rich. And on top of that, they get the huge tax breaks. maga. Must be like XMAS day every day of the year for the Richie Riches, who don't even live off their principal earnings and live solely or primarily from interest.

Those of you making your stupid comments about breaking the law or what have you are missing the point of what Mr. Booker is saying.

He *really* tiptoes around issues of race, doesn’t he? Not going to talk about the disproportionate rate of convictions for the same crimes between white ppl and Black & Brown folks? Just like he can’t know if Trump really is a racist “iN hIs hEaRt.” 🙄 Interesting.

Sen. Coory, are you willing to share your house to the poors, especially who don't try to work? If you cant, you are fake man.

And our dying horses.fiscal insanity. Its military dog day.nine mil gave thier lives.reckless the mare.look her story up.why are we killing them for meat? Tell the story of our horses pls

We put babies in cages. Infants.

We also vote to kill babies now don't we Mr. Booker.

Who have committed a crime. Duh.

We imprison criminals.

Is there any room left for the criminals?

No! I can’t and I don’t want to believe the American Dream 🇺🇸 of my youth is turning into a nightmare that so closely recalls its worst past enemies

He needs an education.

If you can’t do the time don’t do the crime

Trump will soon imprison journalists, scientists, teachers, and political opponents along with the poor, addicted, and mentally ill.

NicoletteErasms That’s what cowards and sissies do....

Why isn’t Booker incarcerated?

Look at the tent cities of the poor & drug addled citizens in L.A. & San Francisco and you're telling your readers that we lock people up based on that? Goodness. Go to California and walk in L.A. without getting stuck with a drug syringe.

He’s such a hypocrite. Please beware of this wolf in sheeps clothing..

I would have to agree

yes. i worked in prison. saw it firsthand. the state traps low hanging fruit (who don’t have resources to fight the legal system) so that the it appears everyone else is somehow protected. the wall exists to protect the bank accounts of the 1%

In Brazil a former president was arrested for crimes he did not do. The prosecution has made complaints with fragile evidence. even so the judge accepted and condemned Lula. What they did with Lula was the use of justice as a political weapon to get him out of the last elections.

We imprison people for making a mistake and voting when we didn't know our right had not been restored.

He is right on point. The incarceration of those in a lower socioeconomic class, those with mental health issues, to include addiction, and those of the African American race clearly represent the majority in incarceration. No help offered to try to reverse that statistic!

It is a free ticket!

His completely right, what we do not do is put sexual predators in jail - which is where Booker belongs. Why hasn't he been charged with sexually assaulting that poor man?

Suggestion: encourage CoryBooker to extend his hand and invite some of those unfortunate he’s mentions to his dwelling 👀

I notice he still walks free....

Well, we don't imprison the stupid because Corey Booker is free.

But we should be sending McCabe an Rosenstein to jail…

CoryBooker equal justice under law. Look it up before you start spouting about separate tracks for handling criminals.

CoryBooker preposterously avers that citizens should not be protected from criminals who are poor, addicted, mentally ill.

chelsea_janes So does he think we should be jailing journalists and his political opponents?

chelsea_janes Didn't Booker just say he wanted Trump's former campaign manager Manafort to get over 20 years in prison?

Mental illness is part of the fake news spectrum. 'Lock them up' is the solution for the blissfully ignorant.

We imprison convicted criminals and jail pre-trial flight risks.

...and the undocumented children...

What a distortion, where is the friggin proof on this? He is a chicken playing chess, he struts around, knocks the pieces down and crows. WaPo is more than willing to support every friggin word any demonrat says (truth is what WaPo wants it to be)

Maybe if we had the border wall, Corey Booker would keep his mouth shut along with your comments on POTUS who is keeping all his promises. Corrupt Democrats & Fake News like the Post should work on their hypocrisy rather than criticize the President who works around the clock.

We incarcerate ppl who break the law. What about Martha Stewart, Paul Manafort, Jussie, Bernie Madoff to name a few

For profit prisons are a very bad idea

No Cory, we encarcerate criminals.

With all due Respect, CoryBooker, you have a job today that allows you to fix that. Maybe, instead of Bitching, you should choose that path...

Its 'prison for profit'...

billm9 Man has a point.

To Washington Post re: Cory Booker, Dear Cory, before you slam America on this very important & toxic issue, ask yourself, haven’t we been all over this issue 4 weeks & instead of laying down BLAME, say what you would do about it,please! 🇺🇸🇺🇸

You missed one significant group...

The poor are not incarnated in the US for being poor. Poverty is not a crime. Journalists are not arrested for committing journalism. If a journalist and a poor person rob a liquor store, they won’t be arrested for being poor or a journalist, they will be arrested for robbery.

Booker is strongly purporting racism, and I am sick of his nonsense. This country incarcerated people who have committed crimes, period. People who hurt other people or killed them. People who sold drugs to kids, etc. People who had a choice, and chose wrong! They broke laws.

Cory Booker's running mate Kamala Harris didn't seem to have a problem with that.

Booker praises the inner city projects. Mayor deBlasio proudly points out the efficiency of NYCHA

Don't worry, we'll be imprisoning journalists and political opponents before you know it.

As sad as it may be, the poor and addicted most likely commit more crimes, for obvious reasons. Also, if Booker were in legal trouble, I'm sure he would put together a legal team, none of these he speaks of could afford

That is 100% true. You get as much justice as you can pay for.

List is not exhaustive: Afro-Americans.

PharmaBro Booker discovers the electoral value of a social conscience. Before trotting off to pick up his Wall Street cheque...

I pray to god that CoryBooker becomes our next President so that he can pardon his old friend T-Bone. When will the war on drugs end!

Ummm, we imprison a LOT of serial killers, murderers, drug dealers, gang bangers, sexual assaulters, sexual traffickers, human traffickers/coyotes, kidnappers, burglars, carjackers, unregistered lobbyists, $50B Ponzi schemers, corrupt politicians ...

Why do you think we have poor ? Addicted I live in CA Thousands are on our streets Ratseverywhere Typhoid fever. We have no money and the RICH want them away from their neighborhood ( but they do feel badly for them) Many are vets. You come across the border You get everything

the poor, addicted and mentally ill commit crimes. So do rich people and sober and sane people. They all need to be incarcerated.

Only when they break the law.

Mr Booker, please enlighten us with facts jessiesmollet

We “imprison” murderers, rapists, pedophiles and many other “criminals”! Just amazing that so many people continue to want to come legally and illegally!

If they do criminal activities, then they deserve incarceration. No matter who it is. We have laws, liberals are not beneath those laws.

And children

Dems uses to be for a wall with Obama. But not with Trump. Hypocrisy at its best

We imprison those who break the law and through a fair trial are found guilty.

The Groper

He's 100% right. Just look at some of the candidates. Harris herself laughed at a story about threatening a homeless woman with jail time because her kid wasn't attending school. We throw the poor in jail and make it literally impossible for them to ever make it out of poverty.

Wow and he says he loves his country. He needs to live for a year in a third world country and see what happens. SOSVenezuela

Mr. Booker, I think you should go back to law school if this is how you think our penal system works.

agreed, sadly it looks like we're starting to incarcerate journalists also (xychelsea) ... I guess he means we don't incarcerate MSM mockingbird journalists

Sounds like a lesson in metaphors.

We imprison the criminals, actually

Some Presidents wiretap journalists who they deem to be a threat...aka Obama.

We imprison the criminals

Yeah, if they break the law.

I believe that Trump will try to get our country to catch up on the others.

Criminals. Move on rapist.
