Hanipa Maidin says the convicted has two chances to do so - at the High Court and Court of Appeal.

A man sentenced to 10-years in jail for insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad, can appeal for a lighter sentence said"The convicted offender can always file an appeal challenging the sentence if he or she is of the view that such a decision was manifestly excessive. He said since the case started at a magistrate's court, the man can file an appeal with the High Court, and if rejected, the final appeal can be made at the Court of Appeal.

Earlier today, inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun revealed that a man named Alister Cogia, who is the holder of Facebook account 'Ayea Yea', was one of four individuals slapped with multiple charges in Kuching and Kuala Lumpur yesterday for insulting Islam and the prophet. Alister had pleaded guilty to 10 charges under Section 298A of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which deals with the posting of offensive comments and causing disharmony and prejudice on religious grounds.

The Kuching Sessions Court ordered that the sentence for each charge be carried out consecutively, resulting in an accumulative jail term of 10 years and 10 months. Lawyers for Liberty executive director Latheefa Koya said the sentence was disproportionate, and called for it to be reviewed."But every person is entitled to give his view criticising the judgement so long such a criticism is not tantamount to contempt of court," he said.To post or ‘like’ comments on Malaysiakini stories, you will need to sign in with an active paid subscription.

HanipaMaidin. Will you be taking actions against Malay/Muslims politicians who insulted other religions like Christian & Hindus? Or do you NOT CARE and just turn a blind eye! Is this what M'sia is about?

Although not really supporting this kind of sentence, that guy shouldn’t be poking at people’s religion... and respecting others religion is a sign of enlightenment as well

Are we rewinding time too? Religion and state has to be separate. Does insult extend to not agreeing with the ideology of the religion?

The punishment is too severe. 😥

This is what will happen if you use un-Islamic methods to fight for the rights of Islam and the rights of the Prophet of Islam.

Apa punya statement? Inilah dia bila Kit Sial sudah hantaq message marah pasai tak hantam. Paihtu lepas keluaq statement dia habaq: Done backup boss

Did the offender apologize after he pleaded guilty to the offences ? Showed any remorse whatsoever ? No ?

Malaysia Baru boleh!!!!!!!

Hukum sula terus

What about Zakir Naik who insults other religion. He is put in a pedastal. A new Malaysia indeed.

Hang pulak jadi lawyer dia? Biaq betui

Why 10yrs in the first place? After appeal discount one yr issit?

Hope you can appeal against Hell

Should be more than 10 years.

Too harsh a sentence. Sentences must not be to ones whims and fancies. Was the offence a criminal in nature?

Was he appointed a defense lawyer HanipaMaidin ?

Taliban mindset. Creating hates among citizen, against the nature law.

10 years jail is a breach of laws !!! The AG should review this case not pending on the appeal of case ?
