A Federal Court judge orders the war veteran to pay a security to cover Nine Entertainment's court costs ahead of appeal against landmark defamation loss.

Ben Roberts-Smith has been ordered by the Federal Court to pay almost $1 million in security for costs ahead of an appeal against his landmark defamation loss to Nine Entertainment over war crimes allegations.A judge found allegations of war crimes published by the papers had been proven to the civil standardJustice Nye Perram made orders late last week that the war veteran must provide $910,000 in three tranches.

In June, Justice Anthony Besanko dismissed Mr Roberts-Smith's long-running civil case against The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and The Canberra Times. The Victoria Cross recipient continues to deny wrongdoing and has launched an appeal, which is due to be heard across two weeks in February. Following Justice Besanko's decision dismissing the proceedings, the parties have continued to fight in court over who will ultimately pay the enormous legal bill.
