Her accused attacker, Codey Herrmann, previously came into contact with police and his DNA may have been on file - and caught sooner - if such laws had of been in place.During debate, micro parties had pushed for tighter controls around DNA collection and police warnings to potential sex offence victims, but their efforts failed in the chamber.
Both the Liberal Democrats and Derryn Hinch Justice Party put amendments to the Justice Legislation Amendment Bill which were debated for hours into the evening. Liberal Democrat David Limbrick had concerns about data security, the potential for innocent people to have their DNA on a police database, or to be wrongfully convicted.
"We think this is a step too far and police being able to collect DNA from suspects without any judicial oversight is removing a very appropriate check on police power," Mr Limbrick had told reporters."Amendments that are being proposed to weaken police powers in the bill we will not support," Opposition Leader Michael O'Brien told reporters before the bill passed.
Derryn Hinch Justice Party MP Stuart Grimley also tried without luck to amend the bill to allow police to inform potential victims of registered sex offenders.© Nine Digital Pty Ltd 2019
