ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Progressive Conservative justice critic Helen Conway Ottenheimer is calling on the government to act on the deplorable conditions at Her Majesty's Penitentiary .
"Short term, we hear about the mould that's down there, and we're hearing about rodents and rats and mice that are coming up and, in fact, biting inmates while they're sleeping, so obviously, that has to be addressed." "If there isn't going to be a replacement for another four or five years of the HMP, then what are we doing in the interim to ensure that this is a safe and healthy living and working environment for the people there?
Conway Ottenheimer suggests alternative measures to accommodate the prison's poor conditions, particularly for non-violent and minor offenders, such as ankle bracelets, electronic surveillance, community service, and adult diversion.Black mould
