MONTGOMERY, Ala. - A panel of three federal judges has made a final decision on which of the three proposed maps Alabama will have to use in its upcoming 2024 congressional district races. The judges selected remedial plan No. 3 in the Milligan v. Allen case.on the three maps proposed by a special master on Monday. Map 3 mostly closely aligns with the 2023 redistricting map passed by the Alabama Legislature.
In accordance with the 2023 map, the Court recognized Map 3 only split six counties, as opposed to splitting seven counties in Map 1. Map 3 also preserves the cities of Birmingham and Mobile in a single district. It also preserved all eighteen core counties in the Black Belt within Districts 2 and 7 without splitting any of those counties.
The Alabama Legislature was forced to draw new congressional district lines, as a result, with the court ordering lawmakers to create a second district in which the Black population had a fair opportunity to vote into office the candidates of their choice.Even in the case of an appeal, the new map announced Thursday will be used in the upcoming 2024 election.
The secretary of state said he would “keep our state’s elections safe, secure and transparent because that is what I was elected to do.”AG Steve Marshal tweeted two maps showing Alabama’s congressional districts, and asked followers if they could tell which was gerrymandered.Marshall also noted that the VRA was meant to undo gerrymanders, not create them.
