SYDNEY, N.S. — A Cape Breton Regional Municipality councillor says that thousands of dollars toward an investigator and legal fees could have been spared if a fire chief’s harassment complaint against four councillors went through an alternative resolution process.
According to a CBC report on Sept. 22, Seth — who is Tuscarora Mohawk from Six Nations of the Grand River in Ontario and a residential school survivor — said he had strained relations with some CBRM councillors — in part involving a complaint he made that led to a report which found four councillors in violation of the municipality’s harassment policy.
Parsons felt the municipality’s human resources department should have been able to help resolve the matter — and thereby saving nearly $30,000 in the process. Parsons, who admitted he’s “always watchful of expenses” during council meetings and, in particular, CBRM budget discussions, said if after dealing with human resources the matter cannot be resolved, then legal advice would be the next step.
