I started my Cradock schooling at the primary school in Standard 5 . And that is where I was first called into a principal's office for a caning. The principal made me bend over a desk and then hit me three times on the arse with his cane. He then made me thank him. Sometimes, we would be called in to the principal's office, where the two deputy-principals – who we dubbed Hitler and Goering – would take visible pleasure in beating the shit out of us.
The same would happen at rugby practice and on"cadet days", when we would march around in khaki shorts and shirts to prepare us to fight the"swart gevaar" and the"communist onslaught".

nomadglenn Corporal punishment is not assault per se. Poor teachers who are abused in class, with little recourse! They can't even refuse to teach an undisciplined brat (by asking him to stand outside). It's not allowed. All the rights are the childrens'.

nomadglenn I was a rebel during my school days and if corporal punishment was not in place back during those days, maybe i would be serving life sentence in Maximum Prison. It does change people if it is delivered reasonably.

nomadglenn I think this is something a parent decides on and not a law. Personally I stopped smacking when they realised and comprehended, generally age 3. At that point if you cannot have a reasonable comprehensive conversation with your child then maybe you're the problem.
nomadglenn I Say No! to that crap, at primary school I used to get a sham-bock for speaking even when I was quiet the whole day. I don't want the same to happen to my kid.
