A new petition to force healthcare providers to report adolescent pregnancies to the police, has garnered 6500 signatures so far.A petition calling Health Minister Joe Phaahla to make adolescent pregnancies a notifiable incident for healthcare providers has garnered close to 6 500 signatures so far.Child rights activists have raised concerns, though, that reporting all incidents of adolescent pregnancy to the police could deter pregnant girls from seeking medical care.
Activist Kekeletso Khena said she believed some of these incidents were still falling through the cracks.And so, in August, Khena started a petition which calls on Health Minister Joe Phaahla to introduce a similar policy for healthcare providers, including doctors and nurses and even midwives and doulas.
"I think that if we really want to make things better for young people, first of all we need sex education to be given properly because the way it’s given in schools is not very helpful."Second, we need to make sure every clinic is child friendly and understand the importance of confidentiality because that's another reason children won't go to clinics for contraception.
