Court papers claim he was involved in dog fighting and refereeing dog fights over a 20 year period

A senior official at the heart of the US government, has been charged with allegedly running a dogfighting ring over 20 years.

According to the US Department of Justice, Moorefield and Flythe also discussed dog fighting betting, dogs that died as a result of dogfighting, and media accounts about dogfighters arrested by the authorities. Investigators also reported finding battery jump cables which were allegedly used to execute dogs at Moorefield’s house. Five pit bull-type dogs were found at Moorfield's home and five pit bull-type dogs at Flythe’s house, court records show according to the Washington Post.

Online records maintained by the dogs’ owners allegedly show that Moorefield had been involved in dog fighting “since at least 2002,” and evidence of Moorefield’s training for fights, and refereeing other owners’ dog fights, was found periodically over the years, including extensive messaging lining up fights and prize money.

Wayne Pacelle, president of Animal Wellness Action said: “As ugly and horrific as it is, dogfighting can be found just beneath the surface of civil society, with the perpetrators maintaining the veneer of mainstream participation in society.
