Donald Trump sat hunched over the defence table as testimony resumed today at his civil fraud trial, with New York state's attorney general aiming to prove that the former US president inflated his wealth by lying about his property empire.

The trial, now in its second day, could lead to the dismantling of Mr Trump's business empire as he seeks to regain the presidency in 2024.

"Her numbers are fraudulent," said Mr Trump, the frontrunner for the Republican nomination to face Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 election."She's a fraud."The trial's second day began with the government's first witness Donald Bender, Mr Trump's former accountant at Mazars USA, resuming his testimony. Ms James is trying to show that Mr Trump and his company deceived even his own accountants.

Ms James is seeking at least $250m in fines, a permanent ban against Mr Trump and his sons Donald Jr and Eric from running businesses in New York, and a five-year commercial real estate ban against Mr Trump and the Trump Organisation.
