A constable's failure to make any arrests after witnessing the exchange of guns in his nephew's hostel room took centre stage in the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria on Tuesday during the trial into the murder of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa.

He said he saw three of the accused - Bongani Ntanzi, Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, and Mthobisi Mncube - heading to his nephew's room. He followed them because he was suspicious. He had left his service pistol in his nephew's room, so he was anxious and immediately looked for it and smelt it to establish if it had been used.

Defence advocate Zithulele Nxumalo asked Zungu why he had failed to act after seeing the exchange in his nephew's room."As a police officer, you saw people exchange firearms in a hostel room and did nothing," Nxumalo put it to him.Zungu previously told the court he was with the five men at a hostel in Vosloorus for a get-together on the night Meyiwa was killed.Ntanzi, Sibiya, Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Fisokuhle Ntuli are on trial for Meyiwa's murder.

They have pleaded guilty to charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of ammunition. In times of uncertainty you need journalism you can trust.
