Soheil Jelveh, 50, was before Wexford District Court this morning where it heard he was facing three raps

The captain of the MV Matthew has been rejected bail after he appeared in court charged over the €157million cocaine seizure off the south coast of the country.

The court heard evidence of arrest, charge and caution from Det Gda Liam Mangan of the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau. He said Mr Jelveh was arrested for the purpose of charge on Sunday. Mr Mangan claimed to the court that this was the accused trying to flee before the seizure was made, which was the following day.

Det Gda Mangan said the accused was caught "red-handed". He said it was his role to oversee the cargo on the ship and the route of the vessel as captain of the ship.
