Japan court grants bail to former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn after nearly four months in jail

Email Bio Follow Akiko Kashiwagi March 5 at 9:59 AM TOKYO — A court in the Japanese capital granted bail Tuesday to former Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn on his third request after nearly four months in jail for alleged financial crimes.

“I am also grateful to the NGOs and human rights activists in Japan and around the world who fight for the cause of presumption of innocence and a fair trial,” he said in a statement. “I am innocent and totally committed to vigorously defending myself in a fair trial against these meritless and unsubstantiated accusations.”

Ghosn earned a reputation as one of the auto industry’s top executives after turning around the fortunes of both Renault and Nissan and bringing the two companies together in a three-way alliance with Mitsubishi. “It would mean less freedom for Mr. Ghosn, but we proposed limiting exchange of information with the outside by using computers and monitoring cameras,” he said.

Carlos Ghosn Offers to Accept Camera Surveillance in Bid for BailThe former Nissan chairman has been detained by prosecutors since Nov. 19 and is determined to win bail after having two earlier applications turned down, his lawyer said. Japan has a successful prosecution rate in 90%. Incarceration while you're being tried may have something to do with it. The way Ghosn is being treated, one would think he mowed down a kindergarten class. Is their any logical reason for no bail? It's not like he's going to be able easily hide.
