Court frees teacher accused by ex-gov’s wife of stealing $110,267 vanguardngr.com vanguardnews

Oluwatoyin Taiwo of an Ikeja Special Offences Court, Lagos yesterday discharged and acquitted a school teacher, Ebele Mbanugo, who was accused of stealing $110,267 allegedly belonging to Mrs Onari Duke, a former First lady of Cross-River.

According to the state prosecutor, Mrs K. O Sarumi, “the defendant between 2009 and 2011 at American International School, Victoria Island, Lagos, fraudulently misappropriated $110,267.57 property of Child Survival and Development Organisation. She said: “The prosecution failed to prove that the money misappropriated belongs to Mrs Duke. Mrs Duke was not called to testify in this case.“The testimony of the defendant showed how three mammogram machines were bought from General Electric for $133,000 which is higher than the sum allegedly misappropriated by the defendant.

“It is unfortunate that such a laudable initiative could be marred by conflict between Mrs Duke and the defendant over ownership of the foundation,”Mbanugo, in her testimony before the court had denied the allegations, she said that in 2009 she had established an NGO called Run For Cure Africa to raise funds to purchase mammogram machines.
