Hobart City Council has voted 8-4 in favour of a by-law that could see the city become the nation's first to ban single-use plastics by 2020.

The council has asked the Government to consider implementing a state-wide ban on single use plasticsThe ban would apply to any business that provides or sells takeaway food, meaning plastic containers, straws, coffee cups and plastic lids would all be prohibited.

"What that says is that we're serious about leading by example and we're a council that takes the initiative, that makes bold decisions and this is one of those decisions that will have impacts for councils across Australia," he said. But the by-law has a few hurdles it still needs to pass, with the entire statutory process unlikely to wrap up for at least six to nine months.

"This should definitely be approached as a statewide issue in just the same way as the banning of single use plastic bags," he said.

Great initiative by Hobart council good on you. The business council and small business should embrace the change as a competitive advantage for Hobart. Change is your friend.

It's easy just use the wood/bamboo alternatives and pass the extra cost on to consumers. They all have to be imported into Tasmania anyway so the fuel carbon footprint to get them to Tassie is probably the same. Mind you to grow the bamboo in farms reduces rain forest habitat.

There are many alternatives from degradable items to wood ones.

Businesses always cry doom amd ruin about everything, who actually cares what business councils have to say anymore? Good work Hobart, cry me a river business council.
