Trial to decide fate of 11 women and 20 children trapped in Syrian camps

The repatriation of women and children from a Syrian refugee camp last year is strong evidence that the Commonwealth has control over their detention, lawyers fighting for another group of women have argued.

Save the Children Australia launched a legal fight earlier this year, claiming the group’s detention is unlawful and raising questions about why successive federal governments have allowed some women and children to return and not others. “We submit it is abundantly clear from the other documentation that there was a plan to repatriate further women and children from the al-Roj camp,” he said.Credit:Chris Lenehan SC, for the Commonwealth, said the central issue was the Commonwealth’s ability to effect the writ.
