'Non-fatal strangulation is punishable by up to 14 years’ imprisonment'

In the first few weeks of new legislation relating to strangulation in Northern Ireland, there were 81 arrests, it can be revealed.

Belfast Live has obtained exclusive figures which outline arrests and charges linked to the criminal offence. A Freedom of Information request to the PSNI revealed that there were 81 arrests where a person was processed through custody for at least one offence of non-fatal strangulation between the introduction of this legislation and July 31, 2023.

A total of 75 of the 81 arrests were of males and 6 were of female; 32 of the 33 arrests resulting in at least one charge were of males and 1 was of a female. "Non-fatal strangulation is punishable by up to 14 years’ imprisonment. We will be continuing to work with partners to raise awareness of this crime type and encourage more victims to come forward.
