It was said to have a 'disproportionately discriminatory effect'

The controversial Right to Rent scheme, under which landlords face fines and possible imprisonment for failing to check tenants’ immigration status, was said to have a ‘disproportionately discriminatory effect’.

The judge said he was ‘struck by the consistency’ of the evidence he heard from various sources, including the JCWI, Shelter and Crisis, which he said ‘strongly showed’ not only that landlords are discriminating against potential tenants, but that they are doing so because of the scheme. Homelessness charity Crisis told the court it had worked with a woman from the Windrush generation, forced to find a new home after a fire, who was not accepted by landlords because she did not have a British passport.

They also said the groups surveyed were ‘not representative’, as the evaluation had targeted letting agents who specialised in renting to students.

Right to Rent scheme breaches human rights law, says High CourtThe government policy requiring landlords to check the immigration status of tenants had been branded racist by rights groups. I was interested that it was brought about under the guise of racism. You do know that landlords are as many different skin shades & colours as the migrants who come to the country. So again, the do good brigade win by playing a totally inappropriate race card. I fkin hate human rights laws. Change them! Plenty avalible when they all start pissing off soon
