Manus Island detainee Abdulaziz_Ada details the impact of six years of Australia's offshore detention policy at the UN

A Manus Island detainee who won an international human rights award has addressed the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

Speaking on behalf of the Human Rights Law Centre, the 25-year-old said: “After 6 years, we deserve our lives back and a future. We urge your mandates to take this up with the Australian government, which deserves to be held accountable by this Council.” He said the impact of six years of Australia's offshore detention policy had exacted a physical and mental toll.

CatPurry9 Abdulaziz_Ada How did he get there? Who paid for his fare and accommodation? And who gave him permission to leave?

Abdulaziz_Ada Boo hoo...

Abdulaziz_Ada Was a detainee; read refugee, actually beaten to death by a guard?

Abdulaziz_Ada Since when do illegal refugees get to complain about not being allowed to illegally enter our country & demand entry at an international conference. There are far more deserving people out there. Besides, they are allowed to leave detention, just not to travel to Australia.

Abdulaziz_Ada Indonesia is where you came from? And you live PNG? Mmm! ....Indonesia boat people have to be explained ...who you get in that boat WITH, (other bribers) you better love, b/cs you will be living with them in detention centres. Rapists, murderers, mentally ill, maybe for ever.

AmandaPerram Abdulaziz_Ada So well done. Abdulaziz_Ada I hope Australia will free you all soon. Our offshore detention of refugees is wrong and must end.

Abdulaziz_Ada How did he get there.... Who arranged it and more importantly who paid for it. Did it come out of that $50m that Labor has promised to give to the UN. We can only guess.

Abdulaziz_Ada Manus Island is an idyllic paradise

Abdulaziz_Ada Not doing to badly if he is where he is to have a audience like that. Looks pretty well cared for to me.

Abdulaziz_Ada I wonder if I might be given the opportunity to address the UN to ask why illegal immigrants should take the place of genuine refugees who have waited patiently for their turn? Oh that’s right because it doesn’t suit the socialist narrative so loved by the UN and the media

AmandaPerram Abdulaziz_Ada He's a United Nations award winner...... congrats. Keep up the good work. Eventually you'll be home.

Abdulaziz_Ada Well what and where would you have been living otherwise

Abdulaziz_Ada Well go home

Medivac bill will see Australians miss out on treatment: Cormann | Sky News AustraliaFULL INTERVIEW: Mathias Cormann says Australians will be 'kicked out of their houses' and will be forced to wait longer for medical treatment if asylum seekers from Manus Island and Nauru are flown to the mainland under medivac laws.\n\nSo far, no asylum seeker on Manus Island and Nauru has been treated in Australia, despite the passage of the controversial medivac bill last month.\n\nThe legislation, which has yet to receive royal assent, gives doctors a greater say over whether asylum seekers in offshore detention centres can be flown to Australia for treatment, though it still allows the Home Affairs minister to reject transfers on national security grounds.\n\nLabor frontbencher Kristina Keneally has told Sky News the government is engaging in 'fearmongering' over the issue.\n\nMr Cormann says despite Labor's claims, it's a 'fact' that asylum seekers transferred from offshore detention centres would be utilising facilities at the expense of Australians.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n J_C_Campbell That is an utterly atrocious claim from the government. J_C_Campbell But it is true. J_C_Campbell Agree, they have this vote already. The more they go on like this the greater chance of them losing votes. They will only win back votes if they turn positive with policies for the future. Not holding my breath
