A frustrated traveller is planning to take legal action amid an ongoing dispute with Qantas over the alleged disability discrimination he has faced as a customer of the national carrier.

Paul Mulligan, a frequent Qantas flyer who relies on his assistance dog Hugo day-to-day, said he runs into hurdles every time he travels due to the airline’s poor disability staff training and policies.

Mr Mulligan alleged his complaints to the airline go unheard and he is frequently passed between representatives around the world, who are unable to answer to why he faces a number of troubles ahead of flying. Mr Mulligan said he is a frequent flyer with Qantas but runs into hurdles he claims the average passenger does not face. Picture: Supplied“They know the average person can’t afford to take them to court. It’s unlawful.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission earlier this year recorded Qantas as being the leading company - not just airline - with the greatest number of complaints from customers. Virgin Australia has also faced disability discrimination claims and was found unjust by the federal court when the airline failed to allow a customer’s service dog onto their plane.

In a statement published in February, Mr Sackville said the reports “indicate that people with disability often experience avoidable challenges when travelling by air and that more can be done by airlines and domestic airports to address those challenges”.

Qantas CEO ordered to attend mediation session for compensation for sacked workersThe new CEO of Qantas has been ordered to attend a mediation session to determine compensation for 1,700 workers illegally sacked by the airline. This comes after there was a union push to have the compensation determined by the court but this was rejected. Lawyers representing the Transport workers’ union said an open court process would be a more transparent approach but the bid was rejected by the Federal Court on Wednesday by Judge Justice Michael Lee who has ordered both parties to mediation. Lawyers for Qantas wanted their top in-house General Counsel Andrew Finch to be the representative of the company through the mediation process. However, this was also rejected by the judge, who said new CEO Vanessa Hudson needs to attend at least one major mediation session.
