A woman has told a Queensland court how the man she once saw as her "protector" became her "predator" when he abducted her and drove her off a cliff.
Daniel Lewis Matthew Rooney has pleaded guilty to almost 30 charges over the horrific ordeal in May, 2017. Today the Cairns Supreme Court was told the woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, had been friends with the 26-year-old Port Douglas man for about 18 months before the pair fell out.Sometime after they broke off contact, the woman fell asleep in the spare room of a friend's home after a night out.
The court heard Rooney broke into the room, bundled her into a car and drove her around Far North Queensland, assaulting her as she slipped in and out of consciousness. When the woman's friends woke to find her missing they called police, sparking a manhunt that saw Rooney's car chased to the Kuranda Range, north of Cairns, where he swerved off the road and plunged more than 70 metres into the rainforest.Somehow, both of them survived and Rooney was arrested.
