A former chief justice has been brought in to work out a deal between Qantas and the Transport Workers Union on what could be up to $200 million in compensation and penalties for 1700 illegally outsourced baggage handlers.
Justice Lee flagged he wanted people with authority from both sides to attend the mediation, naming TWU national secretary Michael Kaine and Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson, to maximise the chance of reaching a deal. “I also have a very strong view about the need for people to be invested in this process at the highest levels,” he said.
