'Can You Ever Forgive Me?' is a real-life story of how a writer-turned-literary forger turns her life upside-down with her wily schemes as the law catches up with her.

The movie “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” is based on the true story of one Lee Israel , as the best-selling celebrity biographer, who made her living in the 1970s and 80s profiling the likes of Katharine Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead, Estée Lauder and journalist Dorothy Kilgallen.

“So, to have a story featuring a woman who is complicated, who is a difficult person, who commits crimes, yet who is also feisty, smart, clever and ambitious, is exciting.” “Lee was always in her own head and very no-nonsense and I found that really interesting to explore because I don’t get to be that in my life.

“But he’s also sometimes kicked-about and he’s lonely. He was a coke dealer and probably a kleptomaniac, banned from Duane Reade drugstore for shoplifting.
