Opinion: The most revealing insight of Michael Cohen’s testimony

By Karen Tumulty Karen Tumulty Columnist covering national politics Email Bio Follow Columnist February 27 at 6:38 PM Of all the things that President Trump’s former personal lawyer revealed in his remarkable day of congressional testimony Wednesday, the one that shed the greatest light was this: Trump never expected — or even really wanted — to win the 2016 election.

This, of course, is not the first time someone has reported that Trump himself was surprised by his victory. It was a major part of the narrative in Michael Wolff’s best-selling “Fire and Fury,” explaining Trump’s lack of preparation when he assumed the most powerful office in the world. Now, however, he has little left to lose. So when he laid out Trump’s motivations, it carried a ring of truth, and not only because the self-described “fixer” was in a position to see and understand the many levels of calculation that went into the endeavor that put Trump in the White House. In Cohen’s telling, Trump’s expectation that he would lose became the predicate for many of his otherwise inexplicable actions during the campaign.

If the whole exercise of running for president was a pretense, just another reality show, then the lying and manipulation required to pull it off might have seemed, as Cohen claimed, “trivial.” So Cohen made hush payments to women with whom Trump allegedly had affairs, lodged threats of legal action to keep Trump’s presumably embarrassing academic record a secret and fibbed about the possibly nonexistent bone spurs that kept his client from being drafted to fight in Vietnam.

there is nothing that came from what Cohen said. He was disbarred so he can't be a lawyer ever again. He lied in front of congress the is invited back so he could lie again. Republicans are on the lies told

This 'most revealing insight' was the theme of MichaelWolffNYC 's book 'Fire and Fury' -- more than a year ago. For all the book's problems, that basic point always rang true. The campaign was a publicity stunt. Cohen confirmed this. He did not 'reveal' it.

Watch testimony

A lot of people knew this because it was obvious

The most revealing part was that Cohen just perjured himself again, under oath, in the Congress of the United States!!! No collusion, no obstruction, no Racism & did not give the Democrats any answer they wanted😂😂😂

To me the most revaluation if character that was most telling was he offered other people's recordings and didn't flinch. It was only after his lawyer told him it could be unethical. That he said he wouldn't if it violated lawyer client privilege.

This has nothing to do with Russia?

Michael Moore--with contacts inside NBC-- has been telling us this since 2015. I don't think he expected to win, but I don't think he wanted to lose, either. And I suspect Putin applied pressure to get him to run because he had this awesome op planned that he wanted to try out.

That’s why he went to every state that needed attention in the end having 3 to 5 rally’s every day. That is a person who is not trying to win?

CONCOHEN

Bravo Michael

About going to Vietnam dt said to aides: this will be must-see TV. Says it all.

Neither did Clooney and a whole bunch of people in that montage of hubris

The most revealing insight of mine is the republicans acted like yelling bully’s while the democrats asked questions- like a meeting should be held.

The Republicans trying to discredit the truth

Can’t even read this...insight? 😅 Please. Disgruntled employee.

For someone who didn't even want to be President, he's doing a far better job than those who desperately wanted to be President

That it happened.

Nada

Crazy man... who believes this liar?

And then Cohen said Trump colluded with Russia to win the election. Huh?

No collusion?

“I have lied, but I’m not a liar”

Writers at the Washington Post aren't the only liars in Washington...

Haha his testimony was hilarious

Jim Jordan revealed it: democrats colluded and compromised Cohen

The Producers

In three words “He’s a liar”.
