urging federal, state and territory governments to examine and adopt a five-point plan designed to make workplaces safer for all employees.
Among the key demands is a call for “dedicated prevention efforts to address the underlying gendered drivers of sexual harassment.” The statement also calls on “stronger and clearer legal duties”, “access to fair, effective and efficient complaints processes”, “appropriate advocacy and support for workers” and “accessible reporting tools”.“We know the rate of sexual harassment in Australian workplaces is alarming, particularly for women, with 85 per cent having experienced it in their lifetime”, ACTU President Michele O’Neil has told Sky News 2600.
The union body says a survey of more than 9,700 union members has found nearly two in three women, and one in three men, have been sexually harassed on the job.“We believe that there needs to be a new right of action under the Fair Work Act that allows workers to make a sexual harassment complaint in an efficient, effective and accessible way in the Fair Work Commission. At a state level, occupational health and safety laws should include new regulations and codes of practices.
