Drill artists argue their lyrics reflect truth but courts accuse them of inciting violence

Lawyers, musicians, prison staff and human rights activists have called for an end to the harsh treatment of drill musicians by the criminal justice system. Drill is a genre of rap that originated on Chicago’s south side almost a decade ago. Popular in south London since 2017, it has a distinctive beat with lyrics often focused on the violence young people witness around them.
