Cardinal George Pell has withdrawn his bail application during his pre-sentencing hearing, the Victorian Supreme Court has confirmed. Cardinal Pell arrived at the County Court in Melbourne for a pre-sentencing hearing on Wednesday after he was found guilty of five counts of historical child sexual assault.
Pell has lodged an appeal against his conviction and has strenuously denied all allegations against him. Pell, Australia's most senior Catholic, was convicted on December 11 after a lengthy trial. The 77-year-old took leave from his position as the Vatican's financial controller last year to return to Melbourne to contest the charges. The Vatican says it will wait until after the appeal process before deciding what action to take.
