THE Juvenile Court in Kuwait has convicted Turki Ayed Al-Azmi, the killer of Filipina house helper Jullebee Ranara, sentencing him to 15 years in prison, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

Al-Azmi also meted one year imprisonment for driving without license, the DFA said, citing a report from the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait.'The lesser penalties were due to the accused being a minor. He has 30 days to appeal the judgement to the Court of First Instance,' the DFA said in a statement Thursday evening.

Ranara's family has been informed about Al-Azmi's conviction 'and is grateful for the assistance provided [to] them by the government,' the Foreign Affairs department said. The Philippine government 'acknowledges the efforts undertaken by the Kuwaiti authorities to effect a speedy resolution of the case, in the pursuit of justice for our slain kababayan ,' it added.Ranara, 35, was reportedly raped, beaten, ran over and burned by the son of her employer in Kuwait.
