Organ donor law named after Max and Keira set to pass in England

Government ministers argue the change in the rules in England could save up to 700 lives a year by increasing the number of organs available.Keira Ball, from Devon, was nine when she was involved in a car accident with her mum and brother. Her father Joe was approached by the organ donor consent team after doctors in Bristol confirmed they could not save her life.

Keira's organs were used to save four lives, among them Max Johnson, then also aged nine, who received her heart. At the time of Keira's accident, Max was in hospital in Newcastle with heart failure following a viral infection. He was being kept alive with a mechanical pump. The operation was a success and Max, now 11, is doing well, although the anti-rejection drugs he must take every day sometimes make him quite poorly.

A sensible and progressive law that the theSNP voted out. They should hang their heads in shame. Who knows how many lives will have been affected by such a decision. nicolasturgeon sort it out please

This is great news...BUT If u decide to opt out then u should not be allowed to receive an organ should u ever need one. Obviously ppl on medical grounds would be exempt from OrganDonation Theres far too many people in society who are selfish & always happy to take & never give

Expect the letter. Dear person we have urgent need of one of your kidneys to donate as you have found to be a match please present yourself to hospital x on x date to facilitate the harvesting. Or the sorry the computer was down we didn't realise they'd opted out.

You are meat of the state law

Since people are often killed during the 'harvesting' process, not allowed to die of natural causes, that is a very bad idea. I have long had a 'definitely not a donor' card in my card case, but I still know that if a doctor wants to kill me for spare parts, he will do it.

By law everyone should be a donor if their organs are suitable, imo. A dead body should be recycled like any other waste product.

Terrible decision. Because you never said you didn't want to, we're going to anyway. That's not clear consent. Opting-out.

Well let’s see what happens when you are going to cut out a organ from a Muslim family member

F this. Opting out ASAP.

Organs are not harvested from dead bodies, they are harvested while the person is kept artificially alive. Many reports from surgeons of an increase in blood pressure and heart rate as the body is cut open for organ removal. It should be a personal choice, not a government choice

Thank You and RIP Keira. Best wishes Max.

This is the problem we have in the UK, presuming that everyone shares the same beliefs and cultures. This is a multinational country with different religions. Why can’t they pass a law that involves people opting in? to pass a law that implies everyone is a donor is ridiculous.

Good.

I'll be first in the queue to opt-out. I will NOT accept a donated organ and neither will I donate mine. My body, my choice - I'm not a resource of the State to be used as required.

'We own your body.' - NHS

This is the right move. Dead, our organs are of no use to us, but they can help sustain life for others. If you want to be selfish - opt out.

If Christopher Chope objects to this I will personally kick him square in the balls.

So now the state will be able to hack people's bodies parts out, without even having the people's consent, what a dreadful society.
