Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and the Greens have come to a deal on Labor’s Housing Australia Future Fund, removing a double dissolution trigger and meaning that the legislation will now pass the Senate.
The Greens managed to secure an additional $1 billion that will be spent this year directly on public and community housing. The Greens had held out on giving their support to Labor’s housing bill until their demands were met, which led to a months-long stalemate within parliament. The minor party was pushing the Albanese government to increase the annual housing spending to $2.5 billion while demanding stronger rental restrictions.
Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the Greens will, however, continue to fight the Albanese government on trying to get a rent freeze implemented.
