Inspection reports reveal the Ministry of Justice authorised funding for improved security in the wake of a prisoner escape in 2019, but that work is not due to be completed until 2025

“The work was originally estimated to take two years but, due to MoJ delays, completion has been pushed back to 2025.”

It stated that “a serious security breach had led to an escape in 2019; we were given some assurance that action to prevent further escapes had been taken in response to the investigation that followed. However, current local security data evidenced some concerns in the physical aspects of security”.

The Prison Officers’ Association revealed earlier that there were fewer than 100 HMP Wandsworth officers on duty when Khalife escaped when there should have been at least 120.
