SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary The DC Universe currently faces a nightmarish version of the Justice League, and it seems their creation is entirely the fault of Batman. During the Knight Terrors event, every hero and villain on Earth has been trapped in their own personal nightmare thanks to the magic of Insomnia. Now those nightmares are becoming even more literal as they begin entering the waking world.
In Knight Terrors #4 by Joshua Williamson, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Caspar Wijngaard, Frank Martin, and Troy Peteri, Insomnia finally gets his hands on the Nightmare Stone, and now he's capable of dragging every single person's worst fears into the real world, which is seen in horrifying detail when the horror-themed version of the Justice League is unleashed upon the DCU.
Their designs take inspiration from the Justice League's own twisted fears of themselves. Superman is scared that he doomed Earth by landing there, Wonder Woman fears that she will lose herself to her divine heritage, and Batman's fear is wrapped up in his childhood trauma involving guns. But Batman's fears are the entire reason this horrific Justice League has been unleashed into the world.
Though Insomnia is undeniably similar to Joker, it seems their similarities run much deeper than anyone expected. In many versions of Joker's history, his creation hinges on interacting with Batman. Batman, on the other hand, became Batman because he lost his family, and that trauma gave birth to endless nightmares in the Dark Multiverse.
Insomnia seems to have learned from his personal chaos that one nightmare version of a Justice League member can cause endless pain, and so he has decided to expand that to include nightmare variations of all the League members. There's no doubt that Batman is one of the greatest heroes in the DC Universe, but he's crossed a lot of people and indirectly hurt many due to his actions.
