“Before our expansion out west, we knocked off a couple of people trying to pass off the name, but since then there’s nothing, really. You’ll see the odd person on Etsy using some of our trademarks on a mug or a shirt, which we’re fine with, it spreads the name. But … we have to protect our interests looking forward. We’re not in the U.S. right now, but we might be tomorrow, next month, next year. We just can’t have the confusion.

Nahas remembered Monday he’d been contacted in the spring by a woman in Maine, looking for a price on 450 litres of donair sauce. He sent her a quote but never heard back. Before the pandemic, there was a fair amount of interest in King of Donairs franchises on the outskirts of Toronto, in the Hamilton and Burlington areas. Toronto itself seems like a natural location, but Nahas said he won’t be relocating to Toronto to put a stake in the ground there.

All the locations use the same sauce, the same pizza dough recipe and even the same spiced beef, shipped from a federally inspected plant in New Brunswick.
