The Senate last month rejected ASIC’s claim of public interest immunity over the documents. In response, Mr Longo offered to provide the inquiry with public submissions on investigations alongside private hearings, which Labor senators indicated they were open to supporting.
Senator Bragg last month accused ASIC of treating parliament with contempt after it declined to hand over the files to Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones who had been ordered by the Senate to disclose them. “ASIC, as an independent regulator, only shares confidential information relating to investigations and enforcement matters with the government in the very rare event that it is necessary and appropriate to do so,” he said.
