DONALD TRUMP INDICTED: THREE TAKEAWAYS FROM FORMER PRESIDENT’S THIRD INDICTMENTU.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has been assigned to preside over the criminal case of Trump after he was indicted Tuesday for conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding, and conspiracy against rights.
She is known for issuing harsher sentences to those convicted of crimes in the Capitol riots, occasionally stricter than Justice Department prosecutors recommend. The Associated Press reported that Chutkan has sentenced at least 38 people in Jan. 6 riot crimes, with all of the cases receiving prison terms of varying lengths.
Born in Colombia, Cannon graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and clerked for conservative Judge Steven M. Colloton of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit in 2008. Cannon was appointed to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida in April 2020 by Trump. She set the trial date, May 20, 2024, last week, a seeming compromise between a request from prosecutors to speed up the case to December and Trump’s attorney who has pushed to hold off, citing the effect the 2024 election has on the jury.
