During the proceedings, Steyn was also questioned on how he was able to identify accused number 3, Mthobisi Mncube, in court as the same person in one of the photos that were downloaded from his cellphone after he was arrested. Steyn said the pictures were taken a day before Meyiwa’s murder. “Why are you saying that the person in that photo is accused number three?” Mncube’s lawyer Charles Mnisi asked, adding that his client was light in complexion compared to the person in the photos.
This was an integral part of the evidence as the house occupants had described one of the intruders on that night was a man with dreadlocks. During his cross-examination of Steyn, Mnisi first questioned the details surrounding when the photos were taken and how Steyn had obtained them. He then asked Steyn to confirm on what dates some of the photos of his client were taken. After a long back-and-forth on Mncube’s identity, Mnisi then admitted that it was indeed Mncube in the photos.
