Supreme Court upholds murder convictions of Calgary man who killed mother and woman in her care yyc yyccrime

In a unanimous ruling Friday, the top court says no miscarriage of justice arose in Emanuel Kahsai’s trial.Five years ago, a jury convicted the Calgary man of two counts of first-degree murder

Two separate amicus curiae — or friends of the court — were appointed to assist him at different points, but he was unco-operative with them. Justices Bruce McDonald and Ritu Khullar said Kahsai’s decision to refuse legal representation and then proceed to disrupt the trial process was his choice. “He refused to retain counsel subsequent to the preliminary inquiry and was adamant that he wanted to represent himself. Two separate amicus curiae were appointed to assist at different times. He refused to co-operate with either.”
