OPINION: No clean slate in Meyiwa trial for the court of public opinion, writes Kgomotso Modise

The opening of proceedings in the Pretoria High Court by Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng has made it official that the “restart button” has been pressed in the Senzo Meyiwa trial.

That’s the complete wiping of the record. If you are not sure about just how far back this trial is reversing, the new charge sheets being served to the accused should tell you all you need to know. He cannot do all of this by simply reading the record or listening back to the recordings. He would not have the privilege of a real-time experience with the witnesses physically present in court. We all know how contentious the Senzo Meyiwa murder case has been.

There will be no clean slate in the court of public opinion. The lawyers in this trial also have no obligation to wipe the slate. Since then, he has undergone an operation on his spine. The introduction of a new judge, however, will mean that Mosia will have to return to the Pretoria High Court to give testimony. When that may be remains unclear, as the state has changed the order of the witnesses called.
